Mental Health refers to our behavioral and emotional well-being, it is all about how we think, how we behave and how we feel. The term ‘Mental Health’ sometimes means absence of mental disorder. Mental health can affect our daily life, relationships, and even physical health. Mental Health also reduces the ‘ ability to enjoy life’
According to the WHO (World Health Organization), mental health is:
“… a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”The WHO stresses that mental health “is not just the absence of mental disorder.”
Ways to Reduce Stress/ Anxiety:
Make Stress Work for You
Stress can come from all directions. We live in a stress filled world. Rather than only looking for ways to change the stress- filled situations,look for stress that can work for you. Stress is primarily a physical response.When stressed, the body thinks it is under attack and switches to fight or flight mode, releasing a complex mix of hormones and chemicals such as adrenaline, cortisol and norepinephrine to prepare the body for physical action.
Disorganization creates stress. Taking the “dis” out of disorganization can produce a sense of control in knowing what will happen, that in turn reduces stress
Create environment that reduce stress
Colors of the walls, floor coverings, and furniture can reduce stress.Hues such as colling greens and blues are positives colors that can reduce stress and create a sense of well-being. Control the air humidity in your environment to a level that comfortable for you. Too dry or very humid air can produce unpleasant environments. Air humidity can even produce various physical symptoms. Dehumidifiers can take control of the air quality to make rooms feel more livable. You can acquire these portable humidifiers from any department or discount store. Must sure you acquire one with a “quiet” button to reduce the noise when running. If needed, add a few plants to provide a bit of moisture.
Use stress as a teacher.

Recognize what your strength are and focus on taking the time to do a project built on them. Taking on too many projects results in loss of control and creates stress.
Leave time for the unexpected
Look for the natural coping ability to deal with the unexpected. Coping requires time. Time is needed to perceive a crisis and to rally our internal and external resources.
Maintain a sense of humor
Laughing at oneself can release potential stress from the inside. And laughing creates less wrinkles than worrying.
Make decisions wisely
Indecision increase stress. Good leader make decisions and act on them. If a bad decisions is made, reevaluate.
Choose friends carefully
Your choice of friends can be the key to stress reduction. Friends should be people who help us to increase our strengths and create innovative solutions to stressful situations. They support us and reaffirm that we are not alone.
Stop and look at yourself
Take time to recognize signs of stress such as anger, exhaustion, and poor quality sleep. As you become aware of these signs, you are beginning to identify how to make stress work. You are being proactive,not reactive to situations.
Accept what we cannot change
We can accept what we cannot change by changing what we can. Make choices that are realistic, not out of reach.
These lifestyle changes are useful not only for reducing stress but it also helps in improving your overall health and quality of life. Even a small change can make a difference in your life.
