Role of Sex Hormones | Synthesis, Regulation & Function

Hormones are the chemical substances that circulate throughout your body. They are produced and secreted by the glands which play a very vital role in our body functions and daily activities. Different types of hormones affect different glands. Sex hormones form an important and a critical part of our body functions that is generally responsible for regulating the skeletal growths in both the males as well as the females. These hormones affect the internal process of skeletal growth when there is an increase or decrease in the skeletal mass during those periods.

The sex hormones tend to interact with the cytosolic and the specific nuclear receptors such that it can produce masses of genomic effects in an innumerable amount of different vascular cells as present inside the body along with the added non-genomic vascular effects while acting with the specific plasmalemmal receptors.

Our human body comprises of innumerable assortments of different types and forms of hormones each of which performs different functions, few of which may even be interlinked. Growth hormone and sex hormones are few of the examples of those hormone assortments that functions inside our body and regulates our body functions. Hormones are responsible for transferring the messages in between the organs and the cells.

Hormones are secreted in our endocrine systems by the glands that are present inside the endocrine system. This secretion helps in keeping the hormone levels normal and supports in maintaining our body balance. The body thus keeps its balance and functions normally and effectively.

Sex Hormones, Sex Hormones

Ageing, the progressive change, and the process of getting older are also associated with hormones. It is affected by the loss of these sex hormones in the human body, be it male or female. Therefore, if one wishes to restore their feelings of well-being, happiness, comfort, longevity, sexual desires and ambitions, sex drive, pleasures, muscle or bone losses, lost energy levels, or any other effects that are associated with aging, then, one needs to replace their male / female hormones that have been lost during the process of aging.

Certainly, there exists several approaches and procedures that may be done to restore these hormones and look more youthful. Few of such hormone supplements include creams, patches and pellets. These approaches would at times help you in ageing slowly and lead an improved satisfied life during your old age.

Sex Hormones Types

Types and Functions of the major male and female Sex Hormones:

  • Oestrogen: Oestrogen is also called as the female hormone because it is present in higher amounts among the females. Unlike the growth hormone, oestrogen also is also primarily responsible for the growth and development of the body and body functions. Further, oestrogen works to stimulate the growth of fat cells and serves as one of the major element or constituents for reproduction.
  • Progesterone: Progesterone is equivalent to oestrogen, and both are considered to complement each other in the bodily functions. Progesterone antagonizes and upsets the growth patterns in the uterus linings that are driven by oestrogens. It affects the growth.  Further, progesterone is also very vital for the premenstrual cycles where the level of progesterone generally tends to rise in the second part of the menstrual cycle to shrink the premenstrual syndrome. This helps in preparing the uterus for the fertilization process and for the fixing of a fertilized egg to the uterus.

Moreover, progesterone is also very beneficial in supporting a healthy and a successful pregnancy. Any type of imbalance in the ratio of levels of oestrogen to the levels of progesterone points to several problems in your healthy well-being.

  • Testosterone: Unlike the oestrogen, testosterone is known as the male hormone. Testosterone is the most predominant and the major hormone present in men. It helps in the healthy desired growth of muscle mass thereby proving the required strength and stamina. Apart from this it also helps in the growth of bone density, energy boosting, memory growth and an overall healthy well-being. Not only in males, but the availability and presence of testosterone is equally essential in females for a proper balancing. Any deficiency in the levels of testosterone can affect both males as well as the females.
  • Pregnenolone: Pregnenolone is a hormone that is generated from the cholesterol. It is a pioneer of other steroid hormones specifically the progesterone, oestrogen, testosterone and the DHEA. The levels of the pregnenolone tend to deteriorate with your age. Any deficiency in the pregnenolone levels may lead to imbalance health symptoms like mood swings, anxiety, stress, etc.
  • DHEA: DHEA or dehydroepiandrosterone is the hormone that is produced by our body’s adrenal glands. It is believed to be the most abundant steroid hormone present in our body.  It is a pioneer to the oestrogen and testosterone hormones. The level of DHEA generally tends to deteriorate and decline with the age, and thus affecting your body functions which in turn leads to several hormonal problems mood swings, fatigue, bone health, etc.

Sex Hormones: Synthesis

  • Synthesis of the sex hormones is controlled by the production of a hypothalamic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH).
  • During the process of general circulations, GnRH tends to encourage the production of luteinizing hormone (LH) and the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in the pituitary gland.
  • LH further binds itself to the target cells which may again lead to an increase in the extraction of steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) which promotes cholesterol transfers and initiates steroidogenesis.
  • Androgens, DHEA and androstenedione are released in the adrenal cortex.
  • Testosterone is released in the Leydig cells, lying adjacent to the male testes.
  • The production of pregnenolone is initiated in the Leydig cells of the luteinizing hormone.
  • The synthesis of oestrogen in females helps in controlling the growth and development of sexual characteristics in females.
  • The synthesis of glandular oestrogen takes place in the ovarian cells and the corpus luteum.
  • The luteinizing hormone (LH) stimulates the granulosa cells to release pregnenolone.
  • Pregnenolone then diffuses from these granulosa cells and mediate the process of pregnenolone hormone conversion to androstenedione through DHEA.
  • The process of extra-glandular synthesis facilitates the aromatization of androgens to oestrone.
  • The fat cells convert the androgen to oestrone and thereby increases the serum oestrogens.
  • The bones convert testosterone to form local oestrogen and thereby supports the development of epiphyses.
  • Even though oestrogens are usually responsible for balancing the sexual characteristics in females, however, they are also synthesized at some levels in males.
  • Progestin synthesis also exists. The inventories of hormone synthesis alter menstrual cycles during its production.

Sex Hormones: Regulation

  • The release of GnRH regulates the secretion of few hormones like the luteinizing hormone (LH) and the FSH during the movement and circulation.
  • The luteinizing hormone (LH) regulates the release of testosterone from the related cells and stimulates its production.
  • The testosterone released has a negative effect on the luteinizing hormone (LH) and the hypothalamic GnRH
  • The FSH regulates the stimulation and production of inhibin from the related cells.
  • The released inhibin then again feeds an anterior pituitary in return to produce FSH.
  • The regulation of hormones in females may be considered a bit complicated as compared to male hormones regulation. The reason is mainly that of the effects of various hormones that vary during the stages of menstrual cycle.
  • In males, the hypothalamic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) leads to the production of LH and FSH next to the anterior pituitary.
  • Feedbacks from the theca cells are regulated by the production of the progestins.
  • Feedbacks from the granulosa cells are regulated by the production of the inhibin.
  • Feedbacks from the corpus luteum are regulated by the production of the progesterone and oestradiol during the menstrual cycle phase.
  • Any higher amount of the production or release of the progesterone and oestrogen takes place due to the corpus luteum. As a result, the release of LH and FSH are inhibited.
  • Further, the levels of few hormones like specifically the LH and the FSH tend to increase to some higher levels and thus a decrease in the levels of oestrogen and the progesterone takes place whereby causing the occurrence of the certain new follicle.
  • The follicle that is in the growing stage starts to release oestrogen in heavy amounts which thereby also affects the release of LH and FSH
  • The sudden increase of LH and the FSH takes place which then prepares for the process of ovulation. This mainly happens due to a certain increase in the production of oestradiol or the new follicle that gets produced to higher levels.

Hormones tend to control the functions of all the organs, and therefore it becomes extremely important to keep our hormonal levels balanced. Hormone imbalances can have several adverse effects on our total body processes. It affects the way our body stores its energy. It controls the levels of fluids, salt and sugar/glucose in our body. Sex hormones influences and affects the health of both men and women and therefore there always exists a need to keep a track your hormone levels and perform regular assessments and routine examinations to keep a balance of its levels last longer. Even a very small variation in the hormonal levels can take you to adverse situations.

Low Sperm Count- Signs, Causes And Treatment

Most often when a woman is not able to conceive or is not getting pregnant, then it is predicted that the women are infertile. However, men play an equally important role in the process of fertilization. Around 1 in every 5 infertile couple, the reason is the fertility issue of men. Low sperm count in men can be one of the major reasons for this infertility.  Around 90% of the times, the reason for male infertility is the problem of low sperm count. As a couple, struggling to conceive for one’s own child is really a frustrating experience and a concern.

Facts to know:

  • The condition when your sperm counts are low, i.e., less than 15 million sperm/ml are medically termed as oligospermia.
  • In case sperms are found totally missing and your semen sample is tested to have no sperms at all, then that condition is medically termed as azoospermia.
  • During your struggle to conceive or having a child, knowing the count of your sperms that you ejaculate during the process may be quite important.
  • A total sperm count of 20 million or more is a healthy count.
  • 40% or more of your total sperms moving in the forward direction indicates a healthy percentage of mortality rate.
  • Shapes of sperms that consists of an oval head of around 5 to 6 micrometres long and having only one long tail are as healthy sperms.

Ask a Doctor  Consult a Doctor

Signs & Symptoms of Low Sperm Count:

  • Not able to conceive
  • Incapability in having a baby
  • Hormonal problems or abnormalities like having reduced body or facial hairs
  • Lifestyle preferences
  • Reduced sexual desires
  • Issues or difficulty in sustaining the erection (erectile dysfunction)
  • Reduced or low sex drive
  • Sexual problems

Causes of Low Sperm Count:

  • Heat can be one of the causes that may affect the production of normal sperm count.
  • Obesity can be one of the cause because fat may overheat the testicles.
  • Men who sit continuously for long hours like in office sitting jobs, or who work as long-distance lorry-drivers may also get affected due to increase in heat production in the genital areas.
  • Too frequent intercourse practices may also cause lack of supply of the sperms.
  • Smoking too much like more than around 20 cigarettes per day.
  • Consumption of excessive alcohol.
  • Few antibiotics also harm the sperms
  • Stress
  • Fatigue
  • Infected semen
  • Bacterial infections
  • Tumours
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Shortage of tubes that carry and transfer the sperms
  • Medical history like prostate problems, swelling or pain in the testicle area, penis or testicle surgery, scrotum, groin
  • Prior surgeries
  • Exposure or contact with certain heavy metals like lead
  • Radiations or x-rays may also alter the sperm count

Treatments & Preventions for the Low Sperm Count:

The treatment process depends on the cause and level of complications associated with the problem. However, few of the common treatments are listed below:

  • Surgery
  • Medications like anabolic steroids, etc. as prescribed by the doctors
  • Antibiotics may be prescribed
  • Hormonal treatments as per the prescribed medications or drugs
  • Regularizing the sexual intercourse process
  • Avoiding usage of lubricants
  • Maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle
  • Keep away from excessive heat
  • Stay away from excessive smoking and alcohol consumptions
  • Try to manage your stress levels

It is to be noted that both you and your partner must get yourselves tested for fertility even if you already show the symptoms of low sperm count. Later, in case it is detected that you have a low sperm count, still, you should not lose your hope because at times the sperm counts may also get boosted with the right intake of vitamins and other supplements. Otherwise, if the cause of low sperm count is the presence of some hormonal problem in your body, then going for a surgery or a replacement therapy can be helpful.

Apart from this, today there are various other options also available for infertile couples who are unable to increase their sperm count. They may anytime opt for an In vitro fertilization (IVF) or go for an adoption process. Whatsoever is the situation, consulting with your doctor is always the best option to pamper yourself and your partner.

What is Menstruation?

Menstruation is the monthly bleeding which a woman enquires every month after she attains her puberty. It is a biological phenomenon which happens when your body sheds the inner lining of the uterus. In the process, the body also flushes out the impure blood from the uterus through the small opening in the cervix and finally it is expelled out through the vagina. When menstruation happens regularly it is called menstrual cycle. For most women, the menstrual cycle lasts for about 3 to 5 days. Getting your periods regularly is an indication that the important parts in your body are functioning properly. The menstrual cycle provides hormone which keeps your body healthy and also it prepares yourself every month for pregnancy. The cycle is counted from the first day of the period to the first day of the next period. For adults, it ranges from 21 days to 35 days & among young teens it may vary from 21 to 45 days. On an average, the periods occur in about 28 days. Basically, the menstrual cycle is controlled by the rise & fall of the hormone levels.

Ask a Doctor  Consult a Doctor

Puberty & periods:

Girls go through puberty usually between the age of 8 to 13. This is the time when their body & mind undergo a lot of changes. In about 2 years she begins to develop breasts and before 6 months she gets her first period, she may notice a clear vaginal discharge. It is not that a girt develops ovaries, fallopian tubes & uterus during her teens. Every girl baby is born with all of these. The ovaries contain 1000 of eggs also called as ova. The fallopian tubes are thin and stretch from the ovaries to the uterus. The muscles in the uterus are strong enough to carry the fetus and push the baby out of the uterus during the labor.

Every month an egg leaves the ovaries, travel down the fallopian tube and reaches the uterus. The day before ovulation, the estrogen hormone prepares the uterus to accept the egg by building up it’s lining with extra tissues & blood. This makes the uterus thick and cushioned. If the egg is fertilized by a sperm then it gets attached to the uterus. When the egg isn’t fertilized then it paves the way for the menstrual cycle. The uterus sheds the extra tissue along with the blood. This cycle continues to happen every month until the woman reaches her menopause after which the ovaries are unable to release eggs.menstruation

Menstrual cramps:

Menstrual cramps are often dull, achy and even be intense sometimes. Menstrual cramps are due to the muscle contract in the uterus which forces the thin lining to flush out through the vaginal opening. A chemical called a prostaglandin is responsible for this action. Many girls and even woman prefer over-the-counter medicines to overcome the cramps. Instead, you can simply take a warm bath, or put a warm pad over the lower abdomen so as to lessen the pain. Regular exercising throughout the menstrual cycle can also help overcome the menstrual cramps.

Premenstrual syndrome:

A lot of girls and even women undergo mood swings during their periods. Some feel sad without any reason, while some get irritated over silly things, some get angry very quickly while others burst out crying. Some girls even crave certain foods. All these are collectively known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS). PMS is mainly due to changes in hormones. During the menstrual cycle, the female body undergoes a lot of hormonal changes. There may be rise and fall in the hormone level.  These changes can affect the way she feels both mentally & physically. She may feel bloated due to water retention or may have sore or swollen breasts or may even develop unusual headaches.

Usually, PMS goes away after the periods but comes back during the next one. The only way to handle it right is to eat healthy foods, get enough sleep & exercise regularly. The pimples and acne-flare ups during the cycles are also a result of hormone changes.

When should you consult a doctor about your periods?

It is better to seek the advice of the doctor if you notice any of the following:

  • You haven’t attained puberty by the age of 15
  • If your cycle stops for more than 90 days
  • If suddenly your periods become irregular
  • If your cycle occurs very often than every 21 days or less often than 35 days
  • If you encounter heavy bleeding
  • If you fall sick immediately after your cycle

How often should you change you change your pad?

It is advised to change your pad every 4 to 8 hours. Use the ones that have light absorbancy. One needs to change the pad before it becomes fully soaked with blood. Ignoring this might result in deadly disease such as toxin shock syndrome(TSS). It is caused by the bacteria that produce toxins. If your immune system can’t fight the toxins then it reacts to it and develops the symptoms of TSS.

What is a normal menstruation?

When it comes to periods, the word normal covers a lot of stuff beneath it. The following are the factors you need to check upon.

Timing: The timing of your menstrual cycle is very important. It usually lasts for 21 to 45 days in young teens & 21 to 35 days in adults. On an average, you must get your cycles every 28 days. Older women have much shorter and consistent cycles. If you are under medication such as birth control pills or IUDs then it might change your cycle pattern.

Flow: When your egg isn’t fertilized then the lining of the uterus we shed out through the vaginal opening along with the blood and tissues. This is called menstrual flow. Whether, the flow is thick, moderate or heavy it is all considered normal.

Apart from PMS, there are few other menstrual problems that one might face. Those are heavy periods, absent periods & painful periods. Let’s have look at each of them.

Heavy periods: It is also called as menorrhagia. This is when you bleed more than normal. Also, your periods may last for longer days such as 5 to 7 days. It is due to the imbalances in the hormone levels especially estrogen & progesterone. Other causes of heavy bleeding include:

Absent periods: due to various reasons, a woman may not get her periods. This condition is called amenorrhea. Due to any problem in the pituitary gland, or any defect in the female reproductive system or a delay in puberty may be some reasons for a girl/woman to not get her periods. This is called primary amenorrhea.

Other causes of amenorrhea are :

When adults do not menstruate then there may be many reasons associated with it. It includes:

  • Breastfeeding
  • Menopause
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Reproductive infection
  • Premature ovarian failure
  • Stopping birth control pills

Painful periods: your periods may not only be heavy or light, it may also be painful due to various reasons. Extremely painful periods is called dysmenorrhea. This may be linked to underlying medical problems such as fibroids, Pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis.

Male Infertility and Erectile Dysfunction- Symptoms and Causes

Erectile Dysfunctioning: For many couples, reproduction has been a natural and simple experience. But it is not the same for many. A man’s fertility generally relies on the quantity & quality of his sperm. If the number of sperm a man ejaculates is low or if the sperm is of poor quality, it will be difficult and sometimes impossible for him to cause pregnancy. Male infertility is diagnosed only after both the partners and tested and the reproductive problems have been found in the male.male infertility, erectile infertility, symptoms of erectile dysfunction

How Common is Male Infertility?

It is a very common problem. For 1 in every 5 couples, the infertility problem solely lies in the male. It is been estimated that about 1 in every 20 men has the same kind of infertility problem with a low number of sperms in his ejaculate. However, only 1 in every 100 men has no sperm in his ejaculate.

Symptoms of Male Infertility:

In most cases, there are no signs of infertility. Intercourse, erections, and ejaculations will happen without any difficulty. The quantity of semen ejaculated seems to be normal to a naked eye. Medical tests are required to detect male infertility.

Ask a Doctor  Consult a Doctor

Causes of Male Infertility:

Male infertility is usually caused by problems that affect either sperm production or sperm transport. Through medical testing, the doctor may be able to find the cause of the problem. About 2/3rd of infertile men have a problem with making sperm in the testes. Either low numbers of sperm are made and/or the sperm that is made does not work properly. Sperm transport problems are found in about one in every five infertile men, including men who have had a vasectomy but now wish to have more children. Blockages (often referred to as obstructions) in the tubes leading sperm away from the testes to the penis can cause a complete lack of sperm in the ejaculated semen.

Other less common causes of infertility include:

  • sexual problems that affect whether semen is able to enter the woman’s vagina for fertilization to take place
  • low levels of hormones made by the pituitary gland that acts on the testes (one in 100 infertile men)
  • sperm antibodies (found in one in 16 infertile men).

In most men, sperm antibodies will not affect the chance of a pregnancy but in some men sperm antibodies reduce fertility.

Male Reproductive System:

There are 2 main glands that help in the production of male hormones and sperms. They are the pituitary and the hypothalamus glands. Luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone are the 2 important messenger hormones made by the pituitary gland that acts on the testes.

The tests are a pair of egg-shaped glands that sit in the scrotum next to the base of the penis on the outside of the body. The testes make sperm and the male sex hormone testosterone. It takes about 70 days for sperm to become mature and able to fertilize an egg. When released from the testes, the sperm spends two to 10 days passing through the epididymis where they gain the vital ability to swim strongly or become motile and to attach to and penetrate the egg.

The waves of muscle contractions transport the sperm, with a small amount of fluid, from the testes to the vas deferens. The seminal vesicles and prostate contribute extra fluid to protect the sperm. This mixture of sperm and fluid travels along the urethra to the tip of the penis where it is ejaculated.erectile dysfunction

What is Erectile Dysfunction?

A man is said to have erectile dysfunction if he has permanent difficulty in getting or maintaining a firm enough erection to be able to achieve sexual activity. Most men have occasionally experienced some difficulty with their penis becoming hard or staying firm, but this is not normally causing for a diagnosis of erectile dysfunction. This condition is only considered a concern if satisfactory sexual performance has been impossible on a persistent number of occasions for some time.

See: Facts You Need to Know about Sex after Abortion!

Broadly, two forms of erectile dysfunction can affect men’s sex lives – the main cause is either medical or psychosocial.

Here, psychosocial refers to the psychological effects – including the effects of social relationships – on sexual performance. Medical conditions can also affect psychological well-being, meaning that, while the primary cause of sexual impotence is typically either medical or psychological, there is often overlap between the two.

Erectile dysfunction used to be known more widely as ‘impotence‘ before the causes became better understood and successful treatments came into use. Impotence is a term that is still in use, however, although it can be seen as pejorative.

Know some facts about Impotence!

  • Organic causes are a result of an underlying medical condition affecting the blood vessels & nerves supplying blood to the penis.
  • Mechanical devices are also available to help achieve an erection.
  • Patients experiencing occasional erectile dysfunction and who do not respond to medical treatment may be candidates for surgery to fit a penile implant.
  • A number of prescription drugs, recreational drugs, alcohol, and smoking can all cause erectile dysfunction.

Diagnosis, with the help of a doctor, can identify the likely cause by taking a history, discussing symptoms, performing blood tests to establish the presence of conditions such as diabetes or heart problems, and other physical problems.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction:

The relaxation of muscles allows blood to rush into the cylinder-shaped spongy tissue of the erection chamber. This creates increased tissue pressure and erection. This blood flow process is led by nervous and hormonal triggers when the brain is stimulated by touch.

The normal erectile function can be affected by problems that compromise any of the following normal physiological contributions needed for an erect penis:

  • Blood flow
  • Nervous supply

Vascular causes that affect blood flow and neurological causes that affect nerve signals are the major medical causes of erectile dysfunction, often due to the underlying disease such as atherosclerosis and diabetes.

Smoking and diabetes often cause atherosclerosis, and this narrowing or ‘clogging’ of arteries in the penis is the most common vascular cause of erectile dysfunction.

Physical Causes of Erectile Dysfunction:

The following are a list of common physical causes of erectile dysfunction:

  • Heart disease and narrowing of blood vessels
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Obesity and metabolic syndrome (which are also risk factors for diabetes)
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Hormonal disorders including thyroid conditions and testosterone deficiency
  • Structural/anatomical disorder of the penis, such as Peyronie disease
  • Smoking, alcoholism and substance abuse, including cocaine use
  • Treatments for prostate disease
  • Surgical complications (surgeries include radical prostatectomy, cystectomy, transurethral resection of the prostate and rectal cancer surgery)
  • Injuries in the pelvic area or spinal cord
  • Radiation therapy to the pelvic region.

Numerous medicines can also cause erectile dysfunction. Anyone taking prescription medications should consult their doctor or healthcare practitioner prior to stopping or changing their medications.

  • Drugs to control high blood pressure
  • Heart medications such as digoxin
  • Some diuretics (known as ‘water pills’ that increase urine output)
  • Drugs that act on the central nervous system (in the brain or spinal cord), including some sleeping pills and amphetamines
  • Anxiety treatments (anxiolytics)
  • Antidepressants including monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), selective-serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and tricyclic antidepressants
  • Opioid painkillers
  • Some cancer drugs, including chemotherapeutic agents
  • Prostate treatments, including treatments for cancer, and for benign prostatic hypertrophy (such as 5α-reductase inhibitors). Anti-androgen drugs used for prostate disease and other conditions can also cause erectile dysfunction
  • Anticholinergics – drugs with a wide range of uses that block a neurotransmitter (nerve signal molecule) that affects muscle tone
  • Hormone drugs, including estrogens and drugs that act on luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone
  • The peptic ulcer medication cimetidine

The Psychological causes of Erectile Dysfunction include:

  • Guilt
  • Fear of intimacy
  • Depression
  • Severe anxiety.
  • Depression– which can cause a loss of interest in sex (lower libido) as well as erectile dysfunction – and other mental health disorders
  • Stress fear, anxiety, or anger
  • Stress can include work, financial, and emotional problems
  • Performance anxiety – Repeated feelings of doubt and failure in which worrying about getting an erection can cause a cycle of anxiety that prevents one from being possible
  • Poor communication with a sex partner

Other relationship problems such as pressure from a sex partner – for example, because expectations make sex a task instead of a pleasure.

Bad Effects of High Cholesterol

BAD EFFECTS OF HIGH CHOLESTEROLHigh blood cholesterol is a condition when the cholesterol exceeds the normal limit. Yes, the body needs it but as all the other things, in limits!  It is a type of fat in the blood that the body needs to function normally. Cholesterol is used as a building block for many structures as well as other chemicals and hormones that are essential for the body’s activities. The body creates it and one also gets it from certain foods they eat.

Ask a Doctor  Consult a Doctor

High Cholesterol, Cholesterol, symptoms, causes, treatment, health care

]The body uses cholesterol to produce many hormones, vitamin D, and the bile acids that help to digest fat. But, only a small amount of cholesterol, and when there’s too much cholesterol in the bloodstream, it may be deposited along the walls of arteries, including the coronary arteries of the heart, the carotid arteries to the brain, and the arteries that supply blood to the legs and the intestines. Which in turn causes narrowing and blockage of the arteries, producing signs and symptoms originating from the particular part of the body that has decreased blood supply.

See:  5 Foods that Fight High Cholesterol

Side Effects of High Cholesterol

The mere definition establishes the fact that it is not good for the health and the following are the effects of the high cholesterol:

  • High cholesterol can create a bile imbalance, leading to gallstones. According to the National Digestive Disease Information Clearinghouse, more than 80% of gallstones are cholesterol stones.
  • Very high cholesterol can lead to fatty deposits within your ligaments and skin, as well your liver and spleen. The enlargement of your liver or spleen due to fatty deposits places pressure on other organs within the abdominal cavity, leading to an unexplained stomach or abdominal pain.
  • When plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to the brain, the brain is deprived of oxygen. Brain cells quickly become damaged and start to die (stroke).
  • As coronary arteries narrow due to the cholesterol deposit, it’s harder for blood to make it to the heart. And if an area of plaque breaks open, it can result in a blood clot, which can block blood flow altogether. This puts one at a great risk of having a heart attack.
  • One of the main side effects of high cholesterol is a progressive narrowing of the arteries and hardening of the artery walls, a condition called atherosclerosis. This condition causes the arteries to narrow and harden, increasing the risk of an arterial blockage or blood vessel rupture.
  • Plaque can also build up and interfere with blood flow to the arms and legs (peripheral arterial disease). If the blood supply to the limbs is blocked, there may be numbness or pain. There’s an increased risk of infection in those limbs. Lack of blood can cause tissue death (gangrene) too.
  • Another potential long-term side effect of high blood cholesterol is an increased strain on your heart muscle due to the development of the cholesterol-linked vascular disease. When the arteries narrow the heart pumps harder to push blood through the blood vessels, often leading to an elevation in the heart rate. This puts a strain on your heart over time. Without the apt treatment, this heart strain may increase the risk of potentially fatal heart failure.
  • Angina or chest pain is another effect of the choking arteries and a warning of the red flag to cholesterol.
